Thixoforging of metals is a new manufacturing process between primary forming (casting) and metal forming (forging). Since the discovery of the thixotropic properties of metals in semi-solid state in 1971, many other findings with regard to semi-solid forming have been made by a view of the proceedings in the past eight biannual S2P conferences and the Special Issue Thixoforming. One of the most important discovered advantages of the process is the non-turbulent material filling in the die cavities resulting from the controllable velocity of the semi-solid material. Theoretically this smooth mold filling could eliminate the air entrapment appearing frequently in the conventional die-casting and improve the mechanical properties of the forming parts.
