? There are numerous causes of insufficient maternal milk production. It is often due to insuf-ficientlyfrequentsucklingand/orfailure to "empty" the breasts sufficiently, for example because of nipple disorders. Sometimes, however, drugs are to blame. ? What are the principal drugs known to carry a risk of insufficient milk production in a breastfeeding woman? To address this question, we have carried out a review using the standard Prescrire methodology. ? Overall, there has been little evaluation of the effects of drugs on lactation. ? In general, the drugs involved are those which can reduce the blood levels of prolactin or block the action of oxytocin.
