IN THE UK, the government has pledged to decarbonize the country's entire transport system, including aviation, by 2050. Its 'Jet Zero Strategy', launched on July 19, 2022, aims to future-proof the industry. A key part of the plan is for all airport operations in England to have zero carbon emissions by 2040. One facility is well on course to achieve that goal: Bristol Airport (BRS). Located 13km (8.1 miles) southwest of Bristol city center, its managers boldly plan to create the first net-zero airport in the UK. As they said in their July 2019 Carbon Roadmap, they aim to put BRS "at the forefront of carbon reduction in the UK airport sector." But, to reach that goal, BRS must contend with another, seemingly contradictory, aim: to expand and handle an extra 2 million passengers per year.
