The Latest: Three Japanese lenders - Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI) and the MUFG Bank - have pledged to invest in data centres and telecoms infrastructure in Uzbekistan. Implications: The investment likely comes off the back of the January 2023 announcement of plans to land a subsea cable across the Caspian Sea, connecting data centres in Baku (Azerbaijan). The new data centres in Uzbekistan will be located in the principal cities - Tashkent, Bukhara and Kokand - and will greatly enhance speed, capacity and quality of cloud computing in the country. Partnerships have been formed with Toyota Tsusho for project coordination, JIL to provide equipment to build energy-efficient data centres and train staff, NEC to provide optical wavelength multiplexing communications equipment and for NTT Com to work on expanding the country’s data communication network.
