As Cyclone Mareia approached I was concerned about the Pacific Baza chick sitting in a nest just above our drive, its snowy-white head sticking up over the edge. The wind was intensifying and the nest suddenly dropped to the ground-but without the chick, which was still sitting on a branch. An hour or so later I found the poor little blighter soaking wet and sitting on the ground, looking very forlorn. Only a couple of weeks old and already bashed by a cyclone-not a very welcoming start to life.
