On 17 December Rusal officially started the first phase of its Taishet Aluminium Smelter (TaAZ) in Siberia. The state-of-the-art smelter will operate using clean energy from Siberian hydroelectric power plants, which together with modern gas cleaning equipment and a closed water circulation system, has a low level impact on the environment. CO_2 emissions from the smelter will be one of the lowest in the industry, says Rusal.
