Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated everywhere in the country -from schools, colleges to government and non-government offices. More often than not, fairs and exhibitions are held across the country to promote all things indigenous including khadi and silk. Many new initiatives are unveiled on this day and recently the Prime Minister told women in Vellery village in Tiruvannamalai district that they could now spend more time weaving the famous Arani silk sarees, rather than fetching pots of water. The latter was promised under the Centrally sponsored Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). Silk is a natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. The production of silk originated in China in the Neolithic period, although it eventually reached other places of the world. The total silk production in India during 2021-2022 was 34,923 MT, an increase of 3.4 % Y-o-Yover the previous year (33,770 MT). This production is around 88.4 % of the targeted annual production for the year 2021-22. The share of mulberry production is the largest among other types of silk produced in the country.
