A range of unidirectional (UD) carbon fibre reinforcements that feature uniform gaps within them in order to facilitate resin-infusion processes was launched at JEC World by Oxeon AB of Boras, Sweden. The gaps between the tows in the reinforcements, called TeXtreme Gapped UD, are of 0.3 mm in size and serve as routes through which air and resin can pass during processing, enabling them to be wet-out quickly and uniformly. Oxeon says that the mechanical properties of parts produced from TeXtreme Gapped UD are consistent with those made from UD prepregs, which (unlikeTeXtreme Gapped UD) need to be stored at low temperatures. The reinforcements can be deposited by standard automated fibre-placement (AFP) and automated tape-laying (ATL) machines.
