Due to a sharp rise in electricity prices in Europe in recent months, several aluminium smelters have curtailed production or even shut down plants. Aluminium Dunkerque was one of the first to announce a 3% curtailment of production in December due to a leap in electricity prices in France. In January a spokesman for the Dunkerque smelter confirmed an extended production cut of 15%.
