"Pandemics don't stop science." I wrote that last year in my introduction to the annual State of Science issue, and it still holds true. As we continue to grapple with the wearying impact of COVID-19, the Discover team took great solace in preparing this issue, which spotlights other amazing research happening across the globe - and off the globe. As vaccines were beginning to safeguard lives here at home, we marveled at the search for life on another world when the Perseverance rover landed on Mars and began its hunt for samples that will one day be brought back to Earth. It didn't hurt that Perseverance took a traveling companion with it: the indomitable (and adorable) Ingenuity helicopter, whose first flight on Mars made history and filled us with wonder.
