摘要

Cold rolling is an important process for manufacturers of aluminium strip, being used to reduce thickness to very low levels, as well as producing the desired surface finish. Not only can formerly invisible surface defects emerge during this process, but flaws in the cold rolling mill can lead to repeating defects being introduced ahead of sending the metal for further expensive treatment. This makes the cold rolling stage an ideal point for quality control, provided an effective way to monitor surface quality can be put into place. The high-steam environment and fast mill speeds make accurate manual inspection impossible, and also presents significant difficulties to automated inspection systems. However, these challenges can be overcome by using real-time defect detection technology, supported by high-definition video streaming software that allows the product to be re-inspected without the need for re-coiling.
