摘要

The knowledge of wildlife population is essential for conservation. Since complete enumeration of wild life is almost impossible for various practical reasons, it is estimated through counts performed in sample areas and extrapolated to estimate total population in the whole study area. This is done once a year for a long period so that the population trend can be delineated. Monitoring wildlife population from sample areas will be reliable only if estimates based on sample counts are accurate. In Europe, deer population is increasing due to restocking and reintroduction of extinct species and by allowing range expansion for surviving ones. This has also resulted in an increase to populations of carnivores animals since they can survive by effective hunting. Deer populations live in open environments using hedgerows, tree rows, small woods and tall crop as their shelter. The elective habitat of the deer population is woodland. One of the best methods for enumeration in this habitat is drive counts which will provide a true picture of population in the drive area. If there are sufficient numbers of beaters and observers, the population in that area can be well counted. This study assumes that the drive counts are designed properly to produce the best results. Drive counts are performed in all designated areas purpose using a well-designed method. The drive count approach is widely used in most European countries. A problem arises only when the area is too large which may result in many inconsistencies in the estimation. This study proposes and compares some sampling strategies for selecting drive areas and estimating population density, provides insights on the fraction of the sample areas necessary to achieve a level of precision and provides methods for estimating the accuracy of these strategies from sample data.
