The first new NASA authorization since 2017 was slipped into the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, a sprawling bill meant to incentivize American manufacturers to produce semiconductor chips in the United States and to advance research and development efforts at certain federal agencies. The bill passed Congress last week and is expected to be signed into law by President Biden soon. The NASA authorization amends Section 40112 of title 51 of U.S. Code to add a new Research and Development Initiative on Reduction of Greenhouse Gas and Noise Emissions from Aircraft to the list of high priority NASA Aeronautics R&D programs.
