Splash bars are one of the oldest methods to increase cooling potential within a cooling tower and have seen significant improvement throughout history. The earliest splash bars were simply wooden planks positioned in a checkerboard pattern. As plastic resins became a widespread and inexpensive material, they became the obvious choice for decreased cost and increased life. The earliest plastic bars replicated the simple shape of wooden planks. But because various plastic manufacturing techniques allowed innovation in the shape of the bar, manufacturers have invented many different bar shapes to optimize thermal performance, air pressure drop, and spanning capability.
