摘要

Amidst tensions over the future of fossil fuels, the United Nations' (U.N.) latest climate change conference, COP26, ended meekly with few commitments and vague future plans. The result is a path forward that fails to achieve the goal of limiting future temperature increases to 1.5 °C, the level deemed necessary to stabilize the world's carbon budget. Many participants seemed so focused on eliminating fossil fuels that they have lost sight of the overarching goal: reducing CO2 emissions by 2050 while generating reliable electricity and minimizing costs. The expression 'to cut off one's nose to spite one's face' comes to mind.
