摘要

SWARCO McCain, Inc., a leader in the supply of advanced transportation solutions, has equipped the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) with variable speed limit signs for a 15-mile section of I-95 northbound in Virginia. The new signs are located between exit 110 (Ladysmith) and exit 130 (Route 3/Fredericksburg), from mile markers 115 to 130. There are 48 variable speed limit signs located every six-tenths of a mile from one another as well as on three highway on-ramps. Each sign has congestion detectors designed to predict potential traffic problems and drop the speed limit by up to 10 mph per minute. The new LED signs, displaying variable speed limits between 35 mph and 70 mph, are paired with dynamic message boards which use SWARCO's Precision Optic technology resulting in unparalleled legibility and efficiency. Drivers will be able to adjust their speed based on real-time information about conditions and delays on the road ahead. While all of SWARCO McCain's VSLS are capable of being powered by either AC or DC voltage, six of the variable speed limit signs used in this installation are completely off-grid and solar powered. The signs were activated in June 2022 with the goal to reduce crashes and decrease travel times for drivers along the 15-mile stretch.
