Lufthansa Technik (LHT) spokesperson Michael Lagemann is very clear about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global commercial aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) provider: "2020 marked the absolute low point for the global aviation industry and therefore also for us as an MRO market leader. As the number of hours flown plummeted, so the requirement for MRO services declined just as dramatically." As airlines tentatively returned to the air, so began the slow process of recovery through 2021. That process is ongoing, but the market remains challenging, as Jeffrey Lam, president of commercial aerospace at ST Engineering, explained: "Demand for widebody airframe MRO services and component MRO services will pick up, but the Omicron variant is making recovery slower paced than the industry had hoped."
