摘要

Male annihilation and mating disruption provide limited success in the control of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) populations. The ability of T. absoluta to reproduce parthenogenetically, due to Wolbachia (Hertig) (Rickettsiales: Ehrlichiaceae) infection, has been reported as a possible contributing factor to the limited success of management strategies aimed at male moths. The genetic diversity in T. absoluta from four localities in South Africa were investigated by employing a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and Wolbachia strains were identified with the multilocus sequence typing scheme. Fecundity and fertility of parthenogenetically produced eggs and female lifespan were also recorded. High rates (>= 95%) of infection with a single Wolbachia strain (ST41) occurred, but genetic diversity was low and consisted of only four haplotypes, one of which was novel. None of the eggs laid by unmated females were viable. Wolbachia infection in South African T. absoluta populations does not lead to either parthenogenesis or failure of pheromone-based strategies.
