The 1970s and 1980s were a period of rapid growth in winter tourism. The associated change in the role of passenger ropeways from sightseeing amenities to ski lifts was the driver for the construction of fixed-grip chairlifts and surface lifts. This was accompanied by numerous developments in ropeway components, many of which have been superseded by newer designs over the past 50 years, while others have survived virtually unchanged in terms of both function and design. Out of a much larger total, three such components are described below.
