According to the Trade Statistics (preliminary results) of (calendar year) 2022 announced by the Ministry of Finance, steel exports decreased by 6.1% from the previous year to 31.939 million tons. This was the first time in 2 years that the export volume dropped. Since the market prices of overseas steel products saw a decreasing trend, the export volume was around the same levels as in 2020, when the industry was significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. But when calculated in yen, the total value of exports increased by 24.2% to a record high 4.7388 trillion yen due to the weak yen and surpassed the 4.5736 trillion yen recorded in 2008.
