China's MingYang Smart Energy Group has announced the development a 16 MW hybrid-drive offshore wind turbine with a 242 m rotor. It is scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2024. The MySE 16.0-242 machine will be equipped with 118 m-long blades and a single turbine will be able to produce 80 GWh/year of power, and supply more than 20 000 households. It will generate 45 per cent more electricity than Ming Yang's previous turbine model, the MySE 11.0-203. The new hybrid-drive turbine model is designed for high-wind sites and will be capable of withstanding typhoon-class weather conditions. It has been certified by DNV and the China General Certification Center for design.
