The Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) connects everything withintelligence, while the increase in energy consumption generated bynumerous electronic devices puts forward an impending demand on thepower supply. Energy harvesting technology has emerged as a compellinginnovation technology for the net zero emissions of the power supply for theAIoT. Although significant advances have been witnessed in energyharvesting, some issues such as poor electrical output, weak environmentaladaptability, and low reliability are difficult to satisfactorily resolve.Mechanical intelligent energy harvesting can be defined as the systemidentifying the external excitation or its own state and reacting to it, ratherthan relying on electrical sensing elements or a central controller for certainadaptive or programmed functions. The adaptive and programmed functionsexhibit great potential in solving the above-mentioned issues that seriouslyrestrict the development of the energy harvesting technology. Here, ageneralized definition of mechanical intelligent energy harvesting is givencritically and the design methodology is elaborated. The typical reportedenergy harvesting systems with the characteristics of mechanical intelligenceare reviewed. The key research directions in mechanical intelligent energyharvesting are discussed. The mechanical intelligence is expected torevolutionize the development of the energy-harvesting technology and pavethe way for applications.
