摘要

Humankind is a creature of habit. We feel comfortable living in a predictable environment but become anxious when our immediate surroundings are changing rapidly. As the result of carbon-based industrialization for the past three hundred years, climate change has become one of the primary concerns of our generation, which requires long-term commitment and efforts of all to rectify this problem. Two unprecedented weather disasters occurred at the end of 2022, "blizzard of the century" pounded Buffalo New York and nine consecutive "atmospheric rivers" drenched California. The devastating power of the snowstorm that hit Buffalo resulted in 52-inch of snow with daily snow record of 22.3 inches, 80 mile-per-hour wind gust with -30-degree Fahrenheit wind chills, and zero visibility. The series of atmospheric rivers that impacted California dumped 32-trillian gallons of water and caused more than 700 landslides or mudslides in the period of three weeks, where San Francisco had seen the wettest three-week period in 161 years. Newly released satellite data by NASA show that the carbon dioxide emission reached a new record high in 2022, and the global average temperature of the past nine years is the nineth warmest on record, with 2022 being the fifth warmest year. These statistics are even more striking considering that the global weather patterns in 2022 were affected by La Nina. If we simply focus on the data during La Nina years, 2022 was the warmest La Nina year on record. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also reported that the global ocean heat content measured within 2000 meters of depth, climbed to a new record high in 2022. All these data painfully reminded us that further procrastinating in addressing the global warming problem is no longer an option.
