The need to reduce the environmental impact of the dairy sector, promoting sustainability, may limit the growth of the industry internationally, but the world's largest milk producer, India, is projected to double its turnover within the next five years, a global conference has been told. Delegates at the International Dairy Federation IDF World Dairy Summit 2022, (1) staged in Greater Noida, India, near New Delhi, 12-15 September, received an earnest warning from James Lomax, sustainable food systems and agriculture programme officer at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). He said the dairy industry is under stress given its significant consumption of water, energy and feed and greenhouse gas emissions. He stated its footprint for carbon and water must be reduced along with an increase in energy efficiency. In his presentation on food systems in 2022, he even warned that such demand for resources "may trigger social and political unrest. The house is burning but we have the tools to try and address this.... We have to be aware of the influences and the pressures on the dairy industry."
