I recently test-drove a 1984 Mini Mayfair which is up for sale at a local garage. It is a low-mileage, one-owner Mini and I have first refusal as I know the garage proprietor. The car starts and drives generally very well and feels taut, as it should for a 28,000-mile car. One problem I noticed was that, once the engine was warm and the choke pushed back in, the performance suffered terribly and there was a sort of flat spot if I tried to accelerate. On pulling the choke out part way again, the problem improved. The garage owner said he thought it was a mixture problem and there's nothing to worry about. I am concerned though that it may be a more serious engine problem and, if so, I would not buy the car. Can you advise?
