You might think that an obvious way to escape the hot dry summer would be to "live fast, die young". In other words, to be an annual. The difficult part of this strategy is the living fast. Phosphate is the governor of the engine of life. When it is in short supply plants cannot live fast. Consequently you will find few native annuals in those parts where phosphate has been tied up by plants that secrete citric acid from their roots. You will of course see many agricultural annual plants in these areas, because the application of phosphate enables them to grow quickly. Mostly, native annuals grow best in the areas that are too dry for Banksias and Dryandras and where the shrubs are mostly Acacias and Sennas.
