Queensland Herbarium has identified and classified 13 bioregions throughout Queensland: Cape York, Wet Tropics, Einasleigh Uplands, Gulf Plains, Northwest Highlands, Central Queensland Coast, Brigalow Belt, Desert Uplands, Mitchell Grass Downs, Southeast Queensland, New England Tableland, Mulga Lands and the Channel Country. Currently, there are more than 25 botanic gardens in various stages of development, with at least one located in each of these bioregions. This development process has not been specifically planned but there have been five distinct periods in the establishment of the network of botanic gardens. In the first 30 years following the proclamation of the State of Queensland, botanic gardens were established in Brisbane (1855), Rockhampton (1869), Townsville Queens Gardens (1870), Toowoomba Queens Gardens (1875), Cooktown (1878) and Cairns (1886).
