COMPETITION IS AS old as life itself. Inherent in our DNA, it has evolved in both scientific and psychological manners while manifesting in many aspects of human life. In the records of ancient societies dating as far back as 10,000 BCE, there is clear evidence that as competition between humans evolved into sport, it became a developmental tool for human skill building and entertainment in grand coliseums. This holds even more truth today as modern sports have evolved exponentially. As you might have guessed, I am a fan of competitive sports. While there is risk in everything we do, I believe competition in its best form is both an innovation incubator and a driver of participation. For those who choose to engage, it is also a valuable learning environment within which to become better and more proficient. For nearly every special interest that exists today, from Alpine skiing to yachting, there is a professional competitive series. For the purposes of this discussion, I define professional as non-collegiate, privately or commercially funded (sponsored) efforts with financial incentives for competing. So where is aviation's professional sport?
