WE'D USE ALL of the components learned over the course of the day to set up for the final photo shoot (see "We Fly: CubCrafters Carbon Cub EX3 & FX3")-in afield in Washington's Yakima Valley, pretty much selected at random and recently mowed and dotted with rectangular hay bales. Brad Damm of CubCrafters-our lead pilot for the mission-holds a badge with the local sheriff's department, so we weren't particularly worried about upsetting the neighbors. What most concerned us was the use of a previously untouched-by-aviation hayfield as a landing strip for our photo shoot. The fact we would fly in using two kitbuilt aircraft (albeit both made in the CubCrafters' factory nearby) added to the sense of responsibility we each felt in making this unique flight happen safely.
