North et al have done it again. They have shined a light on the problem of burnout in the urological workforce, this time focusing on advanced practice providers (APPs). Assessing the extent and pattern of burnout amongst APPs is particularly timely as they are critical in providing the unmet urological care needed from increasing urological disease burden and an insufficient number of urologists. While their findings of a prevalence rate of burnout amongst APPs of 26.1 may be flawed due to limitations of the American Urological Association census data, it is undeniable that it exists. As burnout may negatively affect patient care, job satisfaction and job retention it is imperative that urologists continue to create a culture of wellness for APPs as well as themselves. Although the optimal strategy to mitigate burnout and create a wellness plan is yet to be defined, the first step is recognizing burnout exists and is a problem.
