This special volume is devoted to present new results on Inverse Problems andControl Theory for evolution equations in the broadest sense. These two notionsare closely related; actually, a dual version of the controllability property is theobservability inequality, and this kind of inequality plays a central role also in inverseproblems, where the goal is to reconstruct the properties of an unknown (oronly partially unknown) system by means of partial measurements. The observabilityinequality guarantees that the measurements are su cient to detect all thecomponents of the system.
