Semiotics is the analysis of how meaning is created and communicated and it originates from the study of how signs and symbols (visual/linguistic) create meaning. Signs are comprised of a signifier and that which is signified. The signifier is the sound/image of an object and the signified is the idea or concept of the object. The sign is the unit that combines signifier and signified into a meaningful unit, an entity that indicates/informs another entity (Barthes, 1967)
