摘要

The popularity of YouTube as a video-sharing source has increased steadily and is commonly used by U.S. adults to stay informed and learn new skills. With its ease of use and plethora of content, it’s no surprise that trainees are using YouTube as a source of education and surgical preparation. However, YouTube is not a peer-reviewed or accredited resource, and many videos may have limited educational value. There are a multitude of peer-reviewed video options available in addition to those mentioned by the authors, including surgical video libraries from professional conferences and academic journals with dedicated video publications. Educational texts sometimes offer surgical videos related to the procedure or condition reviewed. There are known benefits to utilizing video for educational purposes. Videos can supplement education by providing exposure to specific surgical techniques and procedures that trainees are unlikely to encounter. Video-based coaching by faculty for surgical education can reinforce operative skills and techniques.3 It behooves program directors and faculty to inform residents of available options at their disposal that have been vetted for quality or to consider developing a video curriculum for resident education.
