ABS amended its safety guidance to address firefighting and safety systems in the cargo holds of container vessels to respond to the specific challenges presented by increasing volumes of battery-operated vehicles transported by sea before the incident.However, the introduction of alternative fuels is also likely to introduce fresh challenges that will need to be addressed if the next generation of sustainable ships are to be safe, according to global Survival Technology specialist Survitec.Finn Lende-Harung, Commercial Director, Fire Solutions at Survitec explained that while existing fire extinguishing technologies and mediums are highly effective in dealing with gas and methanol-fuelled fires, batteries, ammonia and hydrogen throw up their own challenges.
