© 2023 Elsevier LtdThere are feedforward and feedback loops along the microbiota–root–shoot axis to maintain plant growth or defense under environmental stresses. Here, we highlight a reciprocal interaction between the endodermis and the plant–bacterial community, which stabilizes the diffusion barriers to maintain nutrient homeostasis under nutritional stress.
