Surging commodity prices drove markedly higher recycling revenues for the largest haulers in North America last year. The largest of those companies plans to put a lot of money into upgrading its MRFs in 2022. Waste Management, Republic Services and GFL Environmental reported 2021 recycling revenue increases of 49, 42 and 36, respectively. Waste Management (WM) also reported big boosts in recycling profits. WM reported that its 2021 recycling earnings improved by $186 million. In a recent call with investors, John Morris, WM's chief operating officer, said that, in recycling, each quarter of 2021 "earned a spot among our five most profitable quarters of all time, and we're anticipating an equally strong year in 2022."
