Nanoceramic mould coatings for foundry and casthouse application have been supplied by Ceranovis GmbH in Saarbrucken, Germany, for more than ten years. Top coatings are offered for aluminium gravity die casting that protect the underlying functional coating and thus generally triple the service life of the overall system. The early sintering nanoceramic generates an inert, robust shell providing this protection. The functional base coating, on the other hand, is based on a glass-binder system, as are all such coatings. Especially in very hot processes such as wheel casting or other processes in low-pressure die casting, the glassy binder systems are the weak point.
