The Latest: In January 2023, the government of Hungary has declared the sale of Vodafone Hungary to IT firm 4iG of national strategic interest and exempted the transaction from competition review. Implications: The government is both acquiring a 49 stake in Vodafone Hungary and exempting the transaction from competition review, sidestepping EU rules and therefore heightening risks to investors in the market. As part of the transaction, 4iG acquired a 51 indirect controlling stake and the Hungarian State acquired a 49 indirect stake in Vodafone Hungary. The deal was deemed to serve the security of telecoms services supply and of national strategic significance.
