摘要

The advent of metabarcoding (metaB) in aquatic ecology has provided a huge amountof information on plankton biodiversity worldwide. However, the large datasets obtainedwith that approach are still partially explored, especially for what concerns thestudy of trophic interactions and food webs. In this study, we analysed a metaB timeseries from the Long-TermEcological Research station MareChiara (LTER-MC)in theGulf of Naples, Mediterranean Sea, Italy, to describe the link between plankton diversityand food-webstructure. We derived co-occurrencenetworks from metaB timeseries, identified putative trophic interactions among co-occurrencesbased on biologicalinformation (body size and trophic habit) available for planktonic organisms detectedby metaB, and converted co-occurrencenetworks into conceptual models offood webs. The latter showed structural properties resembling ecological processes,because network modularity (the presence of semi-independentsub-networks)paralleledtrophic hierarchy (the dimensional difference between predator and prey). Wealso analysed the role of planktonic organisms in maintaining network modularity. Thelargest predators occupied distinct modules, suggesting niche partitioning, whereasthe smallest preys worked as fundamental connectors between larger predators (anddifferent modules). Overall, the presence of trophic hierarchy and modularity shownherein supports the view of the high ecological resilience of plankton, pursued viafood-webrewiring, to environmental shifts.
