摘要

Over the last decade, magnetic-based systems have maderemarkable breakthroughs in the field of tissue engineering andregenerative medicine. The ability for contactless manipulationof magnetic responsive biomaterials, or even living cells, hasbeen leveraged to devise innovative concepts that are wideningthe available bioengineering design space that can be exploredin this multidisciplinary field. From the fabrication of cellularconstructs with bioinspired patterns and hierarchical structuresup to the concepts of levitational bioassembly, magnetic systemsare enabling to engineer 3D tissues that better recapitulatethe complex biophysical and biological cues of their nativecounterparts. Moreover, the inherent magnetic responsivenessof this living systems is being explored as mechanical and electricalnanotransducers to further stimulate cell functions, notonly in vitro but also in vivo. Remarkably, recent advances inthe convergence of microfabrication technologies with magneticmaterials is also opening prospects to further fabricateadvanced living microrobots and microphysiological systemswith new added functionalities. Due to their good track recordof biological tolerance and biodegradability, iron oxide-basednanoparticles remain the first choice of (superpara)magneticnanomaterials, but new variants and combinations of nanomaterialare being increasingly explored in this field. Altogether, magnetic systems are contributing in multiple ways to boostthe regenerative potential of bioengineered constructs and maylead to the development of in vitro tissue/organ models withimproved physiological relevance.
