This special volume of Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems - Series S is dedicated to Professor Maurizio Grasselli, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, in recognition of his seminal contributions in the area of Partial Differential Equations and their applications. Born in San Remo (Italy) on January 11, 1962, he studied at the Universitia di Milano, where he received his PhD in Applied Mathematics in 1991, discussing a dissertation titled Identification of relaxation kernels in Volterra integrodifferential equations and applications". He has been a Researcher of the National Research Council (CNR) at the Istituto di Analisi Numerica in Pavia from 1988 to 1992. Let us mention that this institute was directed by Enrico Magenes, who appreciated and followed the work of Maurizio in his early years. Right after, very young he became Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano, where he was appointed Full Professor in 2000.
