摘要

Abstract The data obtained by bottom trawl surveys off southwestern Sakhalin, the estimates of the area of herring spawning grounds in the coastal waters off southern Sakhalin and Kuril Islands, the density of eggs spawned, and the fishery statistics and publications in mass media for the 2000–2020 period are summarized. The stocks of the Sakhalin–Hokkaido herring population off southern Sakhalin (the southwestern and southeastern coasts and in Aniva Bay) and the southern Kuril Islands has been observed to increase since 2015. It has been shown that the abundance of spawning herring, as well as the area of spawning grounds and the egg density, increase all over the Russian part of the range. In particular, the biomass of spawning herring in 2020 was estimated at 35?500 t off southwestern Sakhalin and at 62?500 t off the southeastern coast; in 2021, it was estimated at 21?600 t in Aniva Bay. The total herring catch in the waters off Sakhalin Island and the southern Kuril Islands in 2021 reached 8300 t. These facts indicate a recovery of the Sakhalin–Hokkaido herring stock after a long-term depression. If the tendency persists, this herring can become an important target species of fisheries in the Sakhalin–Kuril region of Russia.
