In 1848, August Wilhelm von Hofmann, the first president of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a pioneer in circular economy (CE), stated: 'In an ideal chemical factory there is, strictly speaking, no waste but only products. The better a real factory makes use of its waste, the closer it gets to its ideal, the bigger is the profit'. Even if CE is recognised today as a necessary cornerstone of sustainable development, we are still far from von Hofmann's ideal. Our task is much more complex than 173 years ago: First, it is not a factory that we want to optimise; it is the anthropogenic metabolism on a global scale that needs to be rearranged in a circular way. This metabolism consists of all economic sectors and of consumers and households who play a key role in this concept. Second, today's ambitions regarding CE go beyond mere economic objectives: The goals of CE are primarily to conserve resources and to protect humans and the environment. It is important to note that CE per se is not an objective; it is rather a means to reach the goals stated above. Because other or additional measures might be more economic for reaching the CE goals, decisions about CE must always be carefully weighed against potential alternatives. Only such goal-oriented considerations lead to optimum solutions from all three viewpoints: economy as well as environment and resource conservation.
