Induced abortions are a common procedure with recognised adverse outcomes that require counselling to enable informed patient choice. This large population-based cohort study included 39 856women dispensed outpatient mifepristone-misoprostol, compared with 8 8 61 women undergoing procedural (surgical) abortion in the first trimester in Ontario, Canada to compare serious adverse events. Its large population size reduced its risk to bias and although the primary outcome was to assess for serious adverse events (such as intensive care unit admission, death or serious morbidity) it also assessed other risks such as haemorrhage, retained products of conception and infection. The study found that, in general, adverse events were rare; however, they were rarer in the procedural group, especially when assessing for less serious adverse events.
