It is shown on the basis of experimental and model studies at the IBR-2 and IBR-2M reactors that pulsed reactors of periodic operation (PRPO) have fundamental limitations with respect to stability. At the same time, degradation changes in the core of PRPO result in substantial weakening of fast power feedback, which causes oscillatory instability. The PRPO power is limited to 2-3 MW even for fresh fuel for safety reasons. A strongly nonstationary character of the parameters of fast power feedback with energy production which results in the corresponding changes of the pulsed reactor dynamics is also noted. Comprehensive studies are required to ensure safe operation of the IBR-2M.
