Effective communication in all parts of life is a wise investment, saving one's time, money, and upset. Over the years working in conflict, litigation, and as a first responder, communication has always been at the forefront for me. I remember my old friend, a trainer who was a dog master with the RCMP, once giving me the sage advice that communication was my best weapon, or at least my best defence. I took him seriously at the time, and over the years I have been grateful time and time again for the communication skills that have helped me deescalate volatile situations and eliminate violence in tense moments. It did not hurt that I did not get hurt either as a result.
