Abstract Post-tanning process is crucial to improve the physical properties of leather in leather manufacture. However, enormous amounts of organic wastewater are produced, due to the poor binding of dyes and fatliquoring agents, especially in chrome-free leather production. In this study, a strategy to facilitate adsorption of the anionic leather chemicals by collagen fibers in the chrome-free leather processing by regulating the metal molar ratio of MgAl layered double oxide (MgAl-LDO) has been reported. MgAl layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH) with different metal molar ratios are prepared by co-precipitation and used as the precursors to prepare MgAl-LDO with different metal molar ratios by calcining method. The results indicate that the charge density of MgAl-LDH laminate increases with decrease in the metal molar ratio. The MgAl-LDO shows a more uniform distribution within crust leather compared to MgAl-LDH. Ts and the thickening rate of the leather tanned by MgAl-LDO are higher than that of MgAl-LDH. Furthermore, dye concentration, COD, and SS of dyeing and fatliquoring wastewater all decrease with decreasing metal molar ratio due to the increase in charge density of MgAl-LDO and favors adsorption of anionic leather chemicals including dyes and fatliquoring agents on leather. The results offer a significant reference for the application of LDH-based nanomaterials in eco-leather manufacture to facilitate the adsorption of anionic leather chemicals.Graphical abstract
