California will provide a $10 million low-interest loan to finance an organics extraction line at a Universal Waste Systems facility, diverting food scraps otherwise destined for landfills to a massive anaerobic digester. The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) in July approved the loan for SoCal Organics Recycling, which is owned by global anaerobic digestion (AD) company Anaergia. The money will fund the installation of an organics processing line at a Universal Waste Systems facility in Santa Fe Springs, Calif. The organics extrusion system will divert about 47,000 tons per year to Anaergia's $185 million AD facility in Rialto, Calif., where the material will be processed into natural gas and fertilizer. Note: This story updates a story published in the August 2022 issue of Resource Recycling magazine. The original story reported the site of this project as an Athens Services MRF in Los Angeles. The project location has since been changed to the Universal Waste Systems facility.
