Founded in 2009 as Garena, a game development and publishing company, it changed its name to Sea in 2017 and functions as a holding company for Garena, e‐commerce company Shopee, and fintech SeaMoney. Shopee claims to be the largest ecommerce platform in SE Asia with over 300m monthly visitors. It also has an operation in Brazil and claims that globally it is the top‐ranked App in the shopping category in Q1 2022. SeaMoney is its digital payments arm offering mobile wallet services, payment processing, credit offerings and other digital financial services. Sea was one of the successful bidders for a Malaysian digital banking licence in May this year in consortium with Malaysian conglomerate YTL.
