摘要

The noise figure of a high gain communication transponder is usually measured using the Y-factor method. In this method, a solid-state noise source (usually, an avalanche diode) is directly connected at the transponder input and the noise power at the transponder output is measured with noise source ON and OFF conditions. The ratio of these two powers, usually called the Y-factor is then used to compute the transponder noise figure. The accuracy of measurement in this method demands for the accurate Excess Noise Ratio (ENR) value of the noise source, the perfect impedance matching between the noise source output and the transponder input and also the minimum required magnitude of Y-factor that must be obtained during the measurement. In practice, all these conditions may not be realized and hence will result in the poor accuracy or large measurement error. Moreover, during noise figure measurement of the transponder under thermal-vacuum environment, the measurement error will be much more due to the presence of lengthy cable between the transponder input and the noise source output. In this paper, an alternative method, called the cold source method has been discussed in detail which could be used for the accurate measurement of noise figure of a high gain communication transponder under clean room as well as under thermal-vacuum environment.
